Khair Ullah was born in 1914 in Nowshera district<\/a> in the family of Afghan<\/a> converts to Christianity<\/a>.[4]<\/a><\/sup> His father, Khair Ullah, embraced Protestantism<\/a> and worked for the Church Missionary Society<\/a>. His mother was the daughter of an Afghan mullah<\/a>, who helped in the translation of Psalms<\/a> in Pushto<\/a> following her conversion<\/a>. His primary schooling took place at the Baring High School in Batala, India<\/a>. He did his masters<\/a> from the Forman Christian College<\/a> in 1933. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Edinburgh<\/a> in 1954.[1]<\/a><\/sup>[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
He served in the Indian Army<\/a> as the secretary of Young Men’s Christian Association<\/a> during World War II<\/a> in the Middle East. He joined the Murray College<\/a> as a lecturer of English language in 1942 and then subsequently served as the Head<\/a> of Department<\/a> and the Principal<\/a> of the college till 1972. He served as the director<\/a> of the creative writing project<\/a> at the Masihi Isha’at Khana in Lahore. During the course of his work, he wrote an Urdu Bible dictionary namely Qamus, which is regarded as his magnum opus<\/a>. After retiring from the publishing house, he joined the Christian Foundation Seminars and published a Hebrew<\/a>\u2013Urdu<\/a> primer<\/a> in 1992. He was ordained<\/a> a presbyter of the Church of Pakistan<\/a> and appointed Vicar<\/a> of the St. Andrew’s Church, Lahore<\/a> in the later years of his life.[5]<\/a><\/sup> In 1994, he and his wife moved to Toronto<\/a>, Canada to live with their daughter.
